Tredegar RFC have reformed their senior side and are set to play their first competitive fixture against Bettws RFC in the National League 3 East division this Saturday. The game will be played at Tredegar's Recreation Ground and will kick off at 2.30pm. Refreshments for spectators will be available and all are welcome back to Tredegar RFC's clubhouse after the match.
As was reported on WalesOnline earlier this year, the club folded during the 2015/16 season, playing only a handful of fixtures before being unable to raise a side. However, thanks to the dedication of a hearty few volunteers (including Sharon Hamer, Director, Geraint Meredith, Chairman, Mark Long, Vice Chair, Rhianan Meredith, Secretary, Justine Bennett, Registration Secretary, Nolan Nicklin, Team Manager and Anthony Preece, Team Support), a number of players have returned to club with a view to returning it to its former glories. Craig "Flakey" Lewis will skipper the side from flanker for the 16/17 season.
Their first challenge will be navigating the tough opponents they will face at the bottom of Welsh rugby's pyramid. The club may have a heritage of producing 1st class players, but if they are return to that level, away matches to clubs such as Abersychan & Tref Y Clawdd will need to be overcome.
If you would be interested in playing or volunteering for Tredegar RFC, please contact Geraint Meredith, Chairman, on 07956471889.
We at the DOSC wish the club, including the junior sections who attended the Dragons' match against Exeter last Friday, all the best for the upcoming season.
